The Tiny Kitchen Bakeshop featured organization for June and July is Seeds of Literacy. Now, you may be saying, “Didn’t you just feature a literacy organization a couple months ago?” And the answer to that is yes—but even if TKB featured organizations that tackle issues around literacy for every campaign this year, it wouldn’t be enough to accurately represent the significance of literacy and the impact that it has on breaking the cycle of poverty in our community.
Seeds of Literacy is an organization that provides basic education and GED®, TASC and HiSET® preparation to adults in the Cleveland area. Unlike other adult programs, however, Seeds of Literacy takes into consideration some of the barriers that may prevent adults from seeking out this opportunity like cost, schedule, and transportation.
Through generous support from private donations and grants and a strong team of over 250 volunteers, Seeds of Literacy provide their services free of cost to over 1000 adults in the Cleveland area each year. With locations on both the east and west sides, as well as a virtual option that was developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, location and transportation are no longer barriers. Enrollment is open year-round so that when a person is ready and available, they can jump right in rather than having to wait until next year or next semester. Each student’s program is individualized and provided through one-on-one tutoring by dedicated and passionate volunteer tutors in a setting that fosters a strong working relationship and trust.
A read through the stories of past students should not be attempted without a box of tissues. They are stories of hope, of second chances—stories of incredibly strong people who have been faced with greater obstacles than I could ever imagine and the compassionate people at Seeds of Literacy standing beside them.
Over the next several weeks, we will be taking a closer look at the cycle of poverty, the role of literacy in that cycle, how Seeds of Literacy tackles this, and how you can contribute to their mission. In the meantime, please take a few moments to follow them on Instagram to stay up to date and check out their website for more info about their program.
Update: Thanks to your generosity, we raised $713.98 for Seeds of Literacy to help them fulfill their mission to improve adult literacy in our community!
